A Bookie’s Life and the Bookie’s Wife

Project Brief

Steve Cain (commissioned the book — son of Ron and Lorraine): “The objective was to have something documented that tells the story of my mother — primarily my mother, for my kids — who were never going to know my mum or have memories of my mum. And whilst my family were still about, especially my dad, I thought I’d get that all down on paper and you can’t tell the story about my mum and where she was from and all that without telling the story about my family which is what it’s all about.”

From the Client

Steve Cain

“We had a lot of fun. I didn’t expect to have that much fun—me, my brothers and my dad and it brought us all closer…When my mum passed…my family grew apart to an extent…This brought us all closer together. On a personal note, it was a great project, a really beautiful project, that I would pay the money for again, if I knew that was going to be the result, irrespective of the book.

I’ve got this book for my kids and they will read it when they are old enough, but other people are reading it too and they have learned a little bit more about us.

I think Simon did an outstanding job of getting the book out to all the people that were involved—like an outstanding job. And Simon knows I do not blow hot air up anyone's arse. He really nailed it and I have got something more than I expected. That’s for sure. I have since spoken to a few people and the great tragedy is we should have done this for my father-in-law, who sadly passed (November 2020).”
